Viscosity is a measurement for how ‘sticky’ a liquid is. A reduction of viscosity can indicate dilution of the fuel, breakdown of viscosity controlling additives or mixing with oil with a lower viscosity. An increase in viscosity can indicate contamination by dirt or soot, contamination with water that makes emulsion or mixing with oil with a higher viscosity.

The viscosity index indicates how the oils viscosity change with change of temperature. High index indicate that the oils viscosity changes little with change of temperature.
